AV Receiver Anthem MRX 700

The anthem MRX 700 (2200 euro) is a powerful, incredibly dynamic AV receiver with a highly professional tool for the correction of Raumakustikfallen.

After all, the MRX 700 is one of the first AV receiver from anthem, who have made a name with official channel components for adults. This heritage is the amp already externally: sober and practical design, readable, and above all not to Flash display and no unnecessary multimedia frills – the iPhone takes only about an optional dock access to the internal circuitry.

The anthem you can’t blame excessive connectivity. But everything important and useful is available: pre outs, analog video (except S-video), USB and the immensely important RS232 socket.

The two USB inputs are reserved for audio data from external hard drives and memory sticks (all FLAC files but are not supported). The Ethernet interface on the back is only receiving Internet radio, for the nostalgic-looking RS232 socket plays a far more important role: not only the room correction curves calculated from the PC will find the way to the MRX 700, but also software updates that keep the anthem on the cutting edge.

The on screen menu is soberly held to capture fast and to operate. This helps the also rather objectively designed main remote control. A second, smaller command timer controlled only the adjoining room features of in zone 2. The seven stages of MRX 700 can provide either every conceivable 7.1 Setup (with additional speakers rear or front) or with the unused resources a separate room acoustic support. BI-Amping of the front speakers, so the separate drive of high – and low-midrange, is, however, not provided.

Also, analog signals are somehow suspect the anthem. Multichannel sound he granted only digital inlet and converts any incoming analog Michael consistently in bits and bytes, without offering the usual audiophile bureaucracies without using “Pure Direct”. Also he knows only sampling rates for the quantization to 44.1 kHz, what friends of the SACD so do not like to see.

As a dedicated home scenario writer, he knows to get 3D-Bilderdaten by its four HDMI inputs on the single output. A video processor with Faroudja roots by ST Microelectronics ensures the necessary processing of analog and digital image.

The anthem room correction or short ARC is a highly professional tool for the correction of Raumakustikfallen. For use is necessarily a PC with Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 required – and a RS – 232 interface. The computer software, a pretty high-quality USB microphone with sufficiently long cable and a serious three-leg tripod is included in the ARC package. On at least five and up to ten audio positions so readings can be determined and stored for two different configurations (for example, with or without subwoofer as movie and music).

The anthem receiver is enabled only for generating the test tones, the recorded results are passed directly from the microphone via USB to the PC and processed there. Out comes a complex frequency chart per an appropriate speaker, representing the measured curve in relation to the desired reference waveform. The PC calculates the adjustments equalizer and sends it to the receiver. There, they are activated via the option “room EQ on/off” per input.

Measurements

That the anthem is a mature powerhouse, one could already guess in the listening room, the laboratory provides confirmation: true sine wave power stereo 8/4 Ohms: 2 x 142/213W, RMS power surround 8/4 Ohms: 5 x 106/132W. Also of complex loads, he can not bring calm. Takes getting used to: All incoming analog signals are sampled kHz only with 44.1 kHz. Consumption standby/operating: 0.3/32W

Hearing test

The anthem MRX 700 laid with the wild Fiddlern and the extravagant Nyckelharpa polka on the Blu-ray disc “Trondheim Solistene style in folk” go like a Dervish, the strings recorded in the typical 2L-Label-Stil circular so room-filling and dynamic act like no second test candidate.

Dolby TrueHD-encoding test came the police disc “wrapped around your finger” in the drive. Right here a bug when the anthem was the testers: the 5.1 recording the receiver must calculate a 5.0 version for the five in the used AUDIO listening room B & W 801 – and mix the LFE share accordingly on the front speakers. It seemed with the washer not to succeed the anthem, anyway, let the State Tom miss the otherwise usual clout. Fortunately, the testers found only this one case, the amp and his bass management with all other offered HD discs (with DTS-HD and Dolby True HD) coped perfectly.

One more tip of the editorial office: the anthem do his service including stereo amplifiers, rather choosing the digital coax input: here the MRX could impress 700 with great scenery and extreme dynamics.
