Apogee Scintilla Mark IV

1985 saw the Scintilla Mk1 – as the little sister of the superlative speaker “Full range” – the light of the world. Now after more than 25 years, the apogee Scintilla MK IV (20000 euro) as a fourth version, found the feared as “Power amplifiers killer” and almost into the oblivion of troubled speaker the way in AUDIO listening room.

The way Magnetostaten Apogee include the legends of plane projectors for almost 30 years. In 1998, apogee acoustics but closed the doors – to the regret of many. It was also the reputation as a “Power amplifiers killer”, which contributed to the legends of the model of Scintilla. Their impedance had a suspected short circuit value of less than an ohm. Only a handful of stages felt was able to drive the exotics, but hardly one unfolded their full sound potential.

Armin Weidner – Apogee-fan and pas passionate amplifier developer – took on the challenge and joined the beautiful with the useful. He designed the amplifier “root160c”, which is one thing above all: short-circuit, so power stable. And he made himself in repairing old Apogee’s reputation; including production of spare parts. What could be more obvious, to revive as the Scintilla?

As name rights holder from Apogee acoustics in the German-speaking world anyway, no problem. And so the first Scintilla MK was introduced in the AUDIO Editor 4 “hand made in Germany”. The stronger magnets and the significantly increased precision of slides manufactured in-House are new. Walker has not touched aware the material and the thickness – free according to the motto “never change A running system” the ingredients he left unchanged; only a few parts were built more stable.

The 81-kilo Paravent resembled the former flagship in the technical design and is unique but until today: in addition to the trapezoidal bass area a line-source as a classic Ribbon was carried out. A nearly five centimeters wide, fluted aluminum Strip provides from about 330 Hertz for the Middle transmission, while the height – and now it comes – are reproduced by four 12.5 millimetres of narrow Alustreifen: two to the Middle tone ribbons and two behind it, but all in the same magnetic field. In addition, that the two forward straps phase to the midrange, but opposition to the rear beer swing.

The technically sure not quite error-free distribution was quickly known for their incomparable heady mid-Highrange. There are mainly two points, which are responsible for this sound. The 1.35 metres long and 4.5 centimeters wide midrange is driven over the entire surface without transformer, can play in broadband and only minimal lifting needed to immediately put the air molecules in motion. The vertical concentration associated with the linear expansion, similar to a cylinder shaft, helps to minimize floor and ceiling reflections and thus maximize the image precision.

In the AUDIO listening room disillusionment became wide with the 4 Scintilla yet first – the film magic wanted to set up. The low end was much too fat and the figure rather diffuse. Only after several attempts, with a tighter placement to each other, a light Angulation on the listening position, and a shorter hearing distance, he came back – the magic. Also the Sub bass benefited from a wall near position, though it remained slightly forward due to a similar resonance in the listening room. The developer is aware of this problem, in addition to a markedly careful statement, also a new version with modified slide clamping is conceivable.

Fortunately, the overall impression was marred only in a few shots with real sub-bass, especially as the depth is rhythmically perfect bound. The rest of the broadcast range compensated the listener for this sensational credible music reproduction. The Scintilla painted sound pictures before the hearing panel, which can hardly be colored, plastic and homogeneous. Whether an acoustic guitar or piano, always bribed the right ratio of basic to overtones, with the Scintilla just fine dynamic extremely sensitively acted. A recording with tenor Christoph Pregardien and pianist Michael Gees proved their extraordinarily homogeneous representation of the details without excessive high dose. No second speaker comes up this corporeal, schlackenfreie and therefore accurate reproduction of the Middle spectrum.

The underexposed keynote observed often in dipole radiators and upper bass range with vocal chill gave way to a warm timbre at the apogee. She made a good figure even at elevated levels, although rock concerts with live level approaching to led to light pressing. The power amplifier developed by Weidner at and on the Scintilla had ear probably not bother with the heavy load. The root160c without a murmur digested even ordinary dynamic attacks with a lot of energy content in the lower frequency regions. The legend needs just the right player – because it really would have been a shame to let fall the myth of Apogee Scintilla into oblivion and to withhold this unique style of play of the next generation.

Conclusion

For me, the apogee Scintilla is one of the few sound transducers, which have earned it as a legend to be dubbed. I believe that this sweet, caressing up and yet so authentic midrange of the Ribbon remains unattainable. Certainly, the large Thin-skinned can any rock concert with a live level play – but he can do something few others dominated: he makes the audience forget that he listens to “only” music. And that’s the point, or?
