The new creation by ME Geithain listens to the name RL930 (from 7380 euro per pair), and is quite unusual: an active 2-way compact loudspeaker is the 930er and designed explicitly for great listening distances (manufacturers recommendation 2.5 to 5 m)

Analog design is duty – as well as coaxial technology at the Saxon Studio specialist ME Geithain. Not that Jochen Kiesler, who recently was allowed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the company, would reject digital technology for esoteric reasons, but he stressed the longevity and continuity of its analog switches and amplifier. Finally, an owner of MEG to be supplied in 30 years with spare parts.
His new creation, the RL930, is this quite unusual: an active, seemingly little to large crisis 2-way compact speaker with ten inch (= 25 cm) large Bass driver and three tweeters. This combination should astonish HiFi connoisseurs, but pursues a purpose: the 930er is designed as a speaker for great sound distances explicitly, the manufacturer recommends 2.5 to 5 m.
The array of three stacked metal dome on a bridge to the cone coaxial serves the purpose of the concentration of the sound waves on the sweet spot: similar to a spotlights of line of, this triumvirate bundles the sound especially in the vertical and so effectively reduces the acoustic colouring ground – and ceiling reflections.
Because while listening to remote field properly level is required, the Saxons, renounced a cardioid radiation and equipped the RL930 with a bass reflex channel, which damped against ugly Middle resonances with special foam is. The also analogue, two-channel amplifier unit along with active crossover is back in the box. It takes signals only via balanced XLR-Plug contrary to and allows a distortion of the place – even in unfavourable positions, in the corner bass filter, as well as a treble by four adjustable, narrow and partly broadband.
Bigger is better
Who has heard ever big horns or heating panels in a stereo triangle with 4 meters edge length, can guess which room panorama can unleash the firewine Geithain. An Opera House like New York Metropolitan is just big enough, the RL930 banned the stage with Richard Wagner’s “Walküre” under James Levine (DG) on a downright epic panorama and shone with an excellent depth even the last corner. Tonally, she stayed on the neutral side and serve the dense Orchestra sound with an obvious homogeneity without seeming intrusive or analytically.
That a speaker with roots from the pro audio can be also a real jokester, proved the 930 at the Kings of Leon with “Knocked Up”: tired and bouncy bass, clean and cool the rest sound events. Although liked a KSD to distribute 2030 slightly more accurate bass beats and a JBL array 800 to convey more pressure at high levels: as an audiophile total package for all kinds of music from far away the Geithain is but hard to beat. Oh, they had however the appropriately large room for this compact wonder!
The RL930 is explicitly designed for far field with listening intervals between 3 and 5 m. A greater convergence is needed in normal listening rooms. The 25-midrange ensures these on the one hand because of its size by itself, on the other hand, the Hochtönerarray that works like a spotlights of line of and vertical bundles (s. 20-degree measurement in pink). The angle remains relatively constant over the areas, a slight expansion is built only to 3 kHz that psycho-acoustically hides the – unwanted – indirect sound into the room something.
Otherwise, the RL930 is metrologically blameless: in addition to excellent neutrality has a very good for compact boxes lower limiting frequency of 33 Hz. The maximum level is limited at 103 dB amplifier side what is subjective but significantly exceeded.
